Puppy Potty Training | A Guide by Rockley Valley Park

Updated: Jun 14

Greetings fellow dog enthusiasts and prospective puppy parents! As experts in all things canine, we at Rockley Valley Park understand the importance of laying down the foundation for a harmonious coexistence with your furry friend. One crucial aspect of this journey is none other than the art of toilet training. Fear not, we are here to guide you through this journey with finesse and expertise!

Step One: Prime Real Estate Selection

Ah, the pivotal decision of where nature's call shall be answered! If you've got a backyard, great! If not, puppy pads or synthetic grass can be handy alternatives. Not only do they mimic the great outdoors, but they also present a more environmentally conscious alternative.

Step Two: Pick A Cue

A crucial aspect often overlooked is the establishment of verbal cues. Whether it be the classic "toilet time," the endearing "wee wees," or "let’s go potty," consistency is paramount. Let every member of the family chant the chosen phrase with unwavering conviction.

Step Three: Read The Signs

Learn to decode the subtle cues indicating your pup's call of nature. Observe the telltale signs - sniffing, circling, or sudden stops during playtime. Guide them to their potty spot when you see these signs.

Step Four: Rewards Galore

Ah, the sweet symphony of positive reinforcement! Praise and reward your puppy when they go in the right spot. Consider taking them outside frequently during the day to increase their chances of success.

Step Five: The Virtue of Patience

Be patient. Don't rush your puppy away from their potty spot too soon. Spend some time with them there to ensure they've finished. And remember to keep rewarding good behaviour for a couple of weeks even after they've got the hang of it.

Even when mastery has been achieved, persist in rewarding for an additional fortnight. Consistency breeds excellence, after all.

Step Six: Embrace the Positivity!

If accidents happen, don't punish your puppy. Redirect them kindly to the right spot and offer plenty of praise when they get it right.

Follow these steps, and you'll be well on your way to a successful toilet training experience with your puppy. For more tips and tricks, check out the Puppy Masterclass and keep an eye out for Rockley Valley Park!
